Today started with a quick ride to Emeryville where we met with some employees of the bio-tech company, Zymergen.

Dr. Kurt Thorn met us at the front office and then proceeded to take us back to the main offices where most employees work. I hadn't really thought much about the industry side of biology until today (only medical and research.) The work done at Zymergen was fascinating. They take existing compounds or things like vaccines and create cheaper or better ways to create the same thing.

All of the employees that spoke with were very laid back and seemed to enjoy their field of work. I am very glad I had the opportunity to attend this meeting with Zymergen because I am not sure what field of biology I eventually want to go into. Attending this meeting opened up many doors of thought for me and I am very thankful!

After our meeting, Dr. Kurt took us over to see the Zymergen labs. The labs were very high-tech and included the use of many robots. How cool!!

Next, we drove over to Berkeley for lunch. Berkeley was a cool college town, but it was nothing like Oxford. There was more homeless population than I would expect to be in a college town.

After lunch, myself and a few other students went to meet with UCSF Benioff Hospital neurosurgeon/ oncologist Dr. Gupta. He sat down and chatted with us about his job and career path for about an hour or so, which is a very big deal! I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to talk with such a successful surgeon, even though I am not considering surgery. His insights about college and graduate work were very beneficial.

Xoxo.
