Welcome to San Francisco (I thought a hostel was a fancy hotel)

Today we made the journey from Asilomar to Stanford then on to San Francisco. In Stanford we met with Lauren O’Connell’s Lab assistant, where she explained Lauren’s lab and the work they are doing with poison dart frogs. It was really inspiring to see all the work that Lauren had accomplished being a young woman in science. Seeing Lauren’s accomplishments first hand and experiencing the assistants love for science was very encouraging to continue with my science education. Not to mention her frogs were just so freaking cool to see in person.

Next, we went up to see Lauren's post doc, who showed us all the cool equipment she gets to work on to study Oxytocin and pairwise responses in the brains of the frogs. It was so awesome to see the equipment she uses because, I have never had the opportunity to see these things in person. The microscopes she used were unlike anything I had ever seen as well. Her enthusiasm about her work was radiating with every word she spoke.

After a great lunch in Stanford, we packed up again for the ride to San Francisco. The ride was full of great music and laughs with my classmates who were soon becoming my great friends.

Arriving in San Francisco, we stopped at baker beach for a picture perfect photo opp of the Golden Gate Bridge! This is my first time ever being in San Francisco, so seeing the Golden Gate Bridge was quite a site to see and made me feel as though I was in a movie scene. After a few pictures and taking in the beautiful view, we headed to our accommodations for the next couple days. Driving through the city was eye opening. The homeless population was seemingly more prevalent than one would think. Most of them did not seem to be okay health wise: limbless, dirty catheters, infected nasty sores. This is something I was not expecting to be shocked by, coming from a big city myself.

The notorious Green Tortoise Hostel was definitely a surprise upon arriving. I had no idea what a Hostel was until today, so I guess I am in for an all new experience: welcome to San Francisco. Xoxo.
