Hi! Welcome to my blog about my adventures in SoCal. So far, I have completed the readings for days my group will be the assigned "masters" of that professors published works we will be discussing on that day. The first reading I read was Rebecca Smith's publication about the amazing work she does with middle and high school science classes and scientists. The program pairs scientists with the classes in hope of the scientist bringing more of a real life application to the basic science they are learning. Coming from an extremely small town, I definitely agree with Smith in her view that there needs to be more emphasis placed on sciences in the public school systems around the U.S. She writes how the scientists are not there for only a day but more-so they become somewhat of a mentor to the students and the teacher as well. I think her work is what the school systems need in order to revive the struggling sciences. Teachers at those ages make such a difference in the young adults lives, so it is awesome that these teachers will be inspiring their students to love science! I, personally, had one amazing science teacher in high school who had such a radiating passion for science that being in her class was a different experience from anything I had ever experienced in public and private schools. Anyways, packing is getting me very excited to be in warmer weather (not 10 degrees)! See you soon xoxo.
